Mumm’s the Word

Original Production: 1991
Awards: Best Kept Secret, Orange Coast Magazine

The story is set the day after the St. Valentine's Day Massacre inside the infamous Mumm's Club. We re-create the atmosphere of this 1929 speakeasy, which means that a handful of unsavory characters are wandering the club, as are local floozies, singers and assorted riff-raff. During the course of the evening, one of the mob bosses is murdered, of course. However, the twist is the three families in contention for power have large loyal family members and each family in this setting is made up by audience members. The experience is filled with special moments from an arousing torch song performed from atop the grand piano, to the eventual stand-off between families. There are more than a few dramatic moments although the evening is played primarily for laughs.
